Our Story

A not-for-profit organization, Breaking Away provides a Life Skills program for adults with developmental disabilities in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.  Our unique initiative is driven by one important mission: to ensure special-needs adults who have completed high school continue to grow and learn in a manner that maximizes their potential—whatever their individual abilities.
A grassroots idea launched by a few determined families, Breaking Away has expanded to become an invaluable resource in the community, operating every weekday (noon until 5 pm) at the Mount Saint Joseph Learning Centre.  Under the guidance of a full-time director and numerous staff, we offer so much more than a respite service.  We provide a challenging, goal-oriented environment that uses individualized learning plans to bring out the very best in each participant.  Daily activities include shopping for groceries, visiting the library, swimming at the John Rhodes Pool, yoga with Jade Wellness, exercising at the Gymnastics Club, taking field trips and preparing and eating meals.  Personal care, including hygiene and nutrition, is another critical aspect of the curriculum.
More than anything, Breaking Away provides what our clients appreciate most: a positive, enjoyable and engaging atmosphere with access to a full kitchen, a gymnasium, and a large classroom.  As one parent has told us: “My daughter is happy, and that is the most important thing.”
